The most popular coloured gems are topaz, tourmaline, rose quartz, amethyst, citrine and peridot:
Charming interplay of colours
Admiration
Coloured gems are admired particularly for their special characteristics, for example their rarity and also their hardness. It is these characteristics that make coloured gems extremely suitable for jewellery manufacture, since they can be cut and set in jewellery items. In addition to these quality criteria, coloured gems are prized for their natural clarity and their colour, which make them so extraordinarily effective.
Topaz
Rich in colour variants, it is above all topaz that is used for large, high quality pieces. The rare blue topaz is also referred to as “noble topaz”.
Tourmaline
A similar variety of colours applies to tourmaline: colourless, pink, red, yellow, blue, green, violet, black and multi-coloured.
Rose quartz
Rose quartz is also highly distinctive, with a colour range extending from pale pink to bright pink.
Amethyst
Amethyst, with its transparent and clear mid to dark violet colour, is a sought-after coloured gem which combines well with other coloured gems.
Citrine
Another favourite is citrine, with colour variants ranging from light to dark yellow and even to golden brown.
Peridot
For example, it can be beautifully combined with peridot, with its predominant colours of yellow-green, olive green and brownish tones. Peridot is also sometimes referred to as chrysolite.
The hardness of gems is stated in Mohs. Diamonds are the hardest mineral on earth, with a Mohs hardness of 10. The coloured gems referred to above have a hardness of 7 Mohs. If handled carefully, gems are unlikely to be damaged. We recommend that you have your jewellery cleaned with ultrasonic cleaner at regular intervals in a goldsmith’s workshop that you trust, and also that you have the settings of coloured gems checked by an expert.
Farbedelsteine & Diamanten
Set in 18 karat gold, these coloured gems – perhaps in combination with diamonds – make for a fresh, youthful and subtle play of colours, for example in the Balou & More and Living Stones Classic jewellery collections. In the Jolie Collection from the House of Wagner, coloured gems are set as solitaires and are shown off to perfection with a diamond-studded ring band. Whatever coloured gem collection from Juwelier Wagner you choose, a truly special look – be it casual or elegant – is guaranteed.
