Coloured gems are admired particularly for their special characteristics, for example their rarity and also their hardness. It is these characteristics that make coloured gems extremely suitable for jewellery manufacture, since they can be cut and set in jewellery items. In addition to these quality criteria, coloured gems are prized for their natural clarity and their colour, which make them so extraordinarily effective.
Topaz
Rich in colour variants, it is above all topaz that is used for large, high quality pieces. The rare blue topaz is also referred to as “noble topaz”.
Tourmaline
A similar variety of colours applies to tourmaline: colourless, pink, red, yellow, blue, green, violet, black and multi-coloured.
Rose quartz
Rose quartz is also highly distinctive, with a colour range extending from pale pink to bright pink.
Amethyst
Amethyst, with its transparent and clear mid to dark violet colour, is a sought-after coloured gem which combines well with other coloured gems.
Citrine

Peridot

The hardness of gems is stated in Mohs. Diamonds are the hardest mineral on earth, with a Mohs hardness of 10. The coloured gems referred to above have a hardness of 7 Mohs. If handled carefully, gems are unlikely to be damaged. We recommend that you have your jewellery cleaned with ultrasonic cleaner at regular intervals in a goldsmith’s workshop that you trust, and also that you have the settings of coloured gems checked by an expert.
